3. Working and earning money

Working and earning money can help Autistic people:

An Autistic person giving two thumbs up. Next to them there is a head with the brain highlight and a plus on the brain.
  • improve their mental health

  • take part in the community

  • feel like they belong.
A person pointing to them self, with a speech bubble showing a tick and a cross. Next to them is a home.

It can also help Autistic people to:

  • control their own decisions
  • live their life how they want
  • use their skills.
A group of icons. the first is a tool and a hard hat. The second is a magnifying glass. The third is a problem icon.

Many Autistic people want to find and keep a job.

But it can be harder for them than other people.

Including people with other disabilities.

A person shaking hands with an employer. The employer has a thought bubble showing an Autism icon and a question mark.

This can be because many employers don’t understand autism.

An employer is a person who hires other people to work for them.

Some Autistic people need support to:

  • move from school to work
  • do their jobs well.

It can also be harder for someone to keep a job when they care for an Autistic person who needs a lot of support.

What we will do

A worker with a speech bubble. Next to them is a government worker with a thought bubble showing an autism icon, and a tick.

We will support people that work for the government to understand more about autism.

A government building. Above it is a tool and a hard hat, and a thumbs up.

We will also make sure the government is a good place for Autistic people to work.

A person giving a thumbs up and a big smile. Next to him is a tool and a hard hat, and a clock.

We will make sure Autistic people can find and keep a job with us.

A school with an arrow pointing to a tool and a hard hat. Below is a worker supporting someone.

We will find different ways to support Autistic people to find a job when they finish school.
