6. Health and mental health services

A heart showing a heartbeat and a plus sign, and an autism icon. There is a problem icon above.

Some Autistic people can have:

  • other health conditions
  • issues with their mental health.
A worker supporting someone. They have a thought bubble showing an autism icon with a tick.

It is important for health and mental health care services to:

  • understand autism
  • work together to give good support
  • have supports for adults and children.
A worker supporting an Autistic person. There is a problem icon above them.

But it can still be hard for Autistic people to get the care they need.

A person looking unhappy while someone tries to support them.

This can also mean some Autistic people get the wrong support.

A person with a speech bubble. A worker is supporting them. The worker has a thought bubble showing an autism icon and a question mark.

This can happen because people don’t understand:

  • what autism is
  • the way Autistic people communicate.
A person with a hand to their mouth, and a high risk icon.

It can also put Autistic people at risk in an emergency.

An alarm.

An emergency:

  • is a dangerous situation
  • is a thing we don’t expect to happen
  • can put our health and safety at risk.

For example, if the staff in a hospital’s emergency department don’t understand autism, they might:

A doctor with a thought bubble showing a tick. Next to them is a clock.
  • take a long time to understand what care an Autistic person needs
A stethoscope and a problem icon.
  • give an Autistic person the wrong health care.

What we will do

A doctor with a thought bubble showing a tick.

We will work with health professionals to make sure they understand more about autism.

A doctor, a nurse, and an ambulance.

This includes:

  • doctors
  • hospital staff
  • ambulance drivers.
A support worker talking to an Autistic person. There is a thumbs up above them.

We will make it easier for Autistic people to use health and mental health care services.

A group of 3 icons. The first is an accessibility icon. The second is a heart showing a heartbeat and a plus. The third is an autism icon.

We will also make health and mental health care services more accessible.

This includes in places far away from cities and towns.
